Its gameplay feels more fluid, with better controls, weapon handling, zombie AI (in some cases), and Undead Labs fleshed out a lot of mechanics, like repairing and refueling vehicles, and outpost upgrades. If you redownload State of Decay 1 today, even the Year-One Survival Edition, you’ll immediately note its age. Sure, we have named characters, but they lack the same flair or memorability of the first game’s heroes. They drip-fed us pieces of story and lore through emergent gameplay, carefully placed easter eggs, and in-game notes found throughout the game world. Instead, developer Undead Labs went another route altogether. Why are zombies suddenly tearing people apart? Who is Red Talon? What is the Black Fever?īut in the second game, the in-your-face story is tossed aside. Throughout the main storyline of the first game, we’ll explore the background of the apocalypse. It’s chaos, and thankfully, a lot of loot is left behind and up for grabs. We dive into the early days of the zombie apocalypse in Trumbull Valley, a time when the military is in full retreat, and everyday citizens like us are left to our own devices. In the first game, we’re introduced to Marcus Campbell, Ed Jones, Maya Torres, Lily Ritter, and countless other fleshed-out characters with personalities of their own. Perhaps the most notable difference you’ll immediately notice upon playing State of Decay and then its sequel is the storytelling and campaign mode.
